Casino apps and the Swiss legal situation
Since the Gambling Act (BGS) came into force on 1 January 2019, online casinos and their apps have been legal in Switzerland only if the operator holds an ESBK licence. These licences are tied to the land-based Swiss casinos; currently around 12 to 21 operators hold such an authorisation. Only their apps and websites may target players in Switzerland.
One particularity concerns the app stores: the Apple App Store and Google Play partly restrict real-money gambling apps depending on the region. For this reason, some licensed operators distribute their app in part directly via their own casino website rather than through the store. With licensed Swiss operators this is harmless – however, you should always obtain the app from the operator's official site.
Caution is warranted, on the other hand, with APK downloads from unlicensed offshore casinos.
